Do You Think You Have a Vaginal Yeast Infection?

Candida albicans. Candidiasis. These two terms are frequently used in conjunction with a vaginal yeast infection. But how can you be sure that you have one? If so, what other options are available?

Vaginal Yeast Infection Symptoms

The most common signs that you are infected is itching and soreness in and around your vagina. You may also experience pain and burning when urinating or when having intercourse. You feel pain, burning, and itching whenever the irritated skin is being brushed against. There may also be a thick, white, clumpy discharge somewhat like cottage cheese but without the smell. The skin around the opening to your vagina may also be red and irritated.

These are the most common symptoms. You will likely experience these the week before your menstruation period.

Unless you have had one before, self diagnosis can be tricky. There are several other conditions with similar signs.

The best surefire way to confirm that you are indeed infected is to get tested by your doctor. He or she may need to take some of your discharge and culture it to see what grows and in what amount.

Treatment Options

If this is your first time, then you may want to leave it alone to see if your body will be able to fix it itself. Sometimes just having your period is enough to kill the excess number of the Candida albicans cells and get you back to your normal self.

If it remains, then you can try non-prescription non-fungal creams, suppositories, or tablets to see if they will work. If you are pregnant, however, it is not recommended you use any form of treatment without first consulting your doctor.

Boric acid capsules are also sometimes recommended. This is a white crystalline chemical that works as both an anti-fungal and an anti-viral. Again, do not use this if you are pregnant.

If the above doesn\’t work, you might want to try prescription medicines.

Yet another option exists with the use of natural treatments. You will be able to find e-books online describing this alternative cure. The good thing about these is that you should experience relief within a day if not sooner!
